The Challenge
TypeSurvey*, a Germany-based platform for creating anonymous surveys, served a diverse user base of students, researchers, and businesses through a subscription model. Despite having basic Metabase reports built on sales data, the company had a fragmented understanding of user behavior. They couldn’t answer fundamental questions: which user segments were most likely to convert to paid subscriptions, what features drove retention, or how revenue varied by geography.
The limited analytics meant that conversion optimization, pricing decisions, and product development were driven more by assumption than evidence. As TypeSurvey looked to accelerate growth, they needed a comprehensive analytics solution that could provide the depth of insight required for strategic decision-making.

TypeSurvey’s subscription model meant that understanding user retention was existential — every churned subscriber represented not just lost revenue but a signal about product-market fit. The company had basic metrics (MRR, total users) but no insight into why users churned, which features correlated with retention, or how different user segments (students vs. researchers vs. businesses) behaved differently. Pricing decisions — which tiers to offer, what features to gate, how to structure free-to-paid conversion — were based on competitive analysis rather than data about their own users’ willingness to pay and value perception.
Our Approach
We designed and implemented a comprehensive analytics overhaul covering the entire user and business lifecycle:
- User Behavior Analytics: We implemented event tracking across the TypeSurvey platform to capture the full user journey — from landing page visit through account creation, first survey built, survey published, and subscription purchase. This funnel analysis revealed exactly where potential customers dropped off and which onboarding experiences predicted long-term retention.
- Revenue & Geographic Analytics: We built dashboards breaking down revenue by country, subscription tier, and acquisition channel. This revealed significant regional differences in willingness to pay and conversion rates — insights that informed both pricing strategy and marketing budget allocation across geographies.
- Financial Performance Dashboards: We created executive dashboards covering MRR, churn rate, expansion revenue, and cohort-level LTV. These dashboards gave the leadership team the financial visibility needed for strategic planning and investor reporting.
- Conversion Optimization Framework: Based on the behavioral data, we identified specific conversion bottlenecks and recommended targeted improvements — from signup flow modifications to trial-to-paid nudge strategies informed by actual usage patterns.
We implemented a feature adoption tracking system that correlated specific platform features (survey templates, analytics views, team collaboration, API access) with subscription retention. This revealed that users who engaged with the analytics features within their first week had significantly higher retention — an insight that directly informed the product team’s onboarding flow redesign. We also built a geographic pricing analysis that showed willingness to pay varied significantly by country, supporting the case for market-specific pricing tiers that could increase both conversion and revenue per user in specific regions.
